Off to Amsterdam on boxing day with the wife for two nights (kids at grand parents) want a nice hotel in a good area £100 night anyone got any recommendations ? Canal hotels ??

Dont want to be miles out of town and not near the seedy side either…

The only recommendation I can give is don’t stay close to the mechanical clock tower thing! It has the potential to drive you mental! 👿

Stayed at the Radisson Blu recently – It’s not a characterful hotel really but it’s a decent place to stay. With a deal and or some internet searching I reckon you’ll get it in budget. Good location, decent rooms, helpful staff, etc.

Don’t stay at the ones with the nice ladies in the window. It won’t end well.

American Hotel in Leidseplien. Based in Southern part of city, good bars, big hotel.
I even met Bill Wyman in the hotel bar.

Casino very close if it takes your fancy, lots of canal trips etc. Anne Franks house about 15 min walk, Van Gogh museum 20 min walk max.

Seven Bridges used to have a good reputation, internet search suggests still good, my parents stayed there when visiting me but that was over 15 years ago. One of the best locations in the city.

renaissance or botel

Sofitel is very nice. Middle of the road pricing, but looks/feels up market.
There are 2, one near the “fun bits”, other in North of Dam square area.

+1 Amsterdam American. Make sure you book a room on the canal side on 3rd floor to get a nice big balcony facing trees and the canal. Food in restaurant was lush and room prices cheap considering location. I’ll upload a balcony view later (on iPod now)

American is pretty good. All our contractors stayed there when I worked over there and really rated it.

I always quite liked the Krasnapolsky too – bit dated in parts (it’s like stepping back to the 70s – bar is very kitsch) but the location is spot on. Only worth considering if you can get a cheap deal though

just stayed in the hotel notting hill (new hotel) – next to heineken brewery / reichsmuseum – very good hotel for £100 after 10% off from hotels.com. central location / next to trams. recommended

Stayed at the Lloyd hotel over the Easter holidays with two kids. Big room, easy to get into town, buy your tram passes at the airport. Flight and four nights was £300pp on Expedia. There is a supermarket across the street for kiddy-priced breakfasts and packed lunches.

The Park is my pick. Lovely place.

Have stayed in Citizen M a couple of times, in Amsterdam and Glasgow. It’s not for everyone, but I love the concept, fantastic showers and huge, ridiculously comfy beds.

The Amsterdam one is a short tram ride from the centre of the city so maybe not as central as you’d like, but perhaps worth a look.

Or for really cool, hotel arena is an old converted nunnery.

The American is in the equivalent of Leicester square.

You can take a nice walk from one side of the city to the other in 40 mins or less, so dont worry too much about location.

Id avoid the district area though, not so nice late at night
