    Hi

Could anyone advise me on how to replace the axle on a Hope XC rear hub?

Is it easy and do I need any specialist tools?

    thanks

    RRR.

I recently replaced some bearings and pawls on my rear wheel XC hub. I just walked up the road to my LBS, bought the parts I needed.

Then, I looked up the XC hub schematic on the Hope website and disassembled the hub as per the drawing. I could have easily replaced the axle at the time, had I needed to.

I have not and did not use any specialist tools to do the job. Just your common-all household DIY kit got me through.

    Ah right, cool.

I've found the picture on the Hope site now – think I will give it a go..

Try here. It's not difficult once you upgrade to the club hammer and hit it harder than you thought possible 😈
Just rememder to always support the hub on in flange and protect the axle from mushrooming when hitting the end.

I'd normally recommend placing an only rotor bolt in the end of the axle to bash instead of the end of the axle, but if your is already bust, it won't matter.
May as well replace the bearings too, as you already have it in pieces.

Or alternatively call the nice people at Hope and they will overhaul the whole hub for £17.50 IIRC.

as much as I'm tempted to take them up with a brake service (I really don't get on with seals), I know from experience this is damned easy to do (even for a mechanical numpty), let alone the P&P costs of send the wheel and I doubt that £17.50 includes returning it to you…

Alternatively, there's excellent instructions here I hope

Thanks very much for the info guys.

Is there any way of removing the axle without removing the bearings though?

The bearings are fine but I need to replace the axle very quickly before a biking trip at the weekend you see…

    QUICK QUERY:

SHOULD THERE REALLY BE NOTHING LOCKING THE FREEHUB ONTO HUB BODY OTHER THAN THE AXLE TYING IT ALL TOGETHER????

    1) you can't reaplce the axle without removing bearings

    2) no, the freehub slides on, the end piece has a litle rubber grommet to stop it just falling off, then the pressure of the QR holds it all together, it doesn;t lock into place
