    Hi folks,

    I’m considering a 40T T-Rex from Hope for my new build.

    Will I be able to use my existing short cage X9 clutch mech or change it for a medium?

    Generally short cage won’t work.

    On a related note I’m considering 40t t-Rex too but can’t get beyond thinking a single cog of that size will demolish a hope freehub. Having just stripped and filed my freehub where the cassette was jammed on (xt 11-36 cassette) I can’t help but think the t-Rex will just cut through the freehub in no time.

    Depends. Shortcage works fine on HTs and FSs that have little chain-growth, but that might not cover your bike.

    Had a TRex on a Hope hub for a few months now and it’s fine so far. It really is only a bailout gear for me so doesn’t get used often.
