Are the Original Hope XC hubs a good basis for a light 29er wheel build or should I flog them and start from scratch with something sexier?

I'm still using a set of mine. They're not really worth selling as they don't fetch any particularly high value even with the retro freaks and they works just fine.

Why would 29ers not have the same requirements hub-wise as any bike?
If you like the hub, use it.

The only issue for 29ers (now that you've edited it!) is that bigger flanges may be desirable to make a very marginally stiffer wheel but I really wouldn't bother about it if you've already got a perfectly good set of hubs spare.

unless you need to change from QR to bolt thru due to your frame or forks, I can't see any reason wny you wouldn't use them.

True. It's only me being a silly weight weenie, paranoid about the weight penalties of 'Big Wheels'

Do 29er wheel-sets generally have bigger flanges then?

Wise words clubber, especially from a financial point of view as we have a baby on the way!Posted 2 years ago # -

Not usually though there are a few that do.
Based on the latest bit of info - congratulations and stick with the Hopes

I'm a big fan of the Hope XCs and have built a couple of sets of wheels with them, after getting them for around £30 each on ebay.
