I’m in the middle of looking for a new set of brakes for my titus motolite. I stuck between Hope race evo X2 or M4 or E4. With the prices in the online store pretty much within a couple of pounds for any of the brakes in question.

I currently run Avid juicy carbons on 185mm rotors which have lots of initial bite but no feel. The x2’s appeal for the weight but I think I’d be running the 183mm discs so swings and roundabouts, the 4 pots just look like pure engineering porn and may allow me to drop to 160mm rotors.

The bike is set up with some fairly light weight parts and I’m pretty easy going on my kit, question is for trail riding including trail centres which is going to be the most suitable in the eyes of the experts here? (also not interested in the other brands because I want to be able to have the parts readily avaialble with good customer back up and to be able to support a british company).

For the bike you describe I reckon X2s will be more more than enough. I went for M4s at the last minute and they are excellent. I think the X2s would have been fine for me but my bike is a lot heftier than yours so I aired on the side safety. Weight isn’t that big an issue for me.

I’ve got mono minis on both my bikes. Tech levers on the Sanderson. Both with 183mm floating rotors and braided hoses. In all honesty I could probably do with M4s on the Sanderson, but it’s marginal.

FWIW I’m 120kg and ride like a hooligan. I think you’ll be fine with X2.

I use race m4 front and race x2 rear on my enduro with 160 rear and 183 front
Never ran out of power or felt like I needed more.
I’ve had them about a year and yet to do anything that change pads

Just bought some Race Evo X2s (183f 160r, pads changed to sintered) to replace some old Formula Oros last week. What a difference! They’re on an LTHT, and I’m about 14st all kitted up, and I have no problems with the amount of power. Bought them from my LBS and after much discussion (mostly me thinking I’d be ‘under-braked’) they convinced me that the X2s would be more than fine. They were right.

On my Enduro I run M4/X2

200 front, 180 rear. Been ample for me including uplifts at the alps.

I have X2’s on my whyte 109, they are more than adequate for most situations, but I have had them out of their depth a couple of times, probably due more to my mincing than the capabilities of the brakes though. 180/160 discs.

The only ‘issue’ Ive had with them is once or twice the front M4 has gone off a bit. A quick piston re-alignment sorts them out.

Well done on choosing Hope brakes. I love them. I’ve got tech v2 on my mountain bikes, original e4 on the road bike, wife has tech m4 on her mountain bike and tech x2 on her commuter.

I notice that you’re looking at race levers rather than tech. The race lever actually gives a little more power than the tech evo lever (not sure if that’s still the case with tech 3).

I think x2 would do you 183f/160r but given the only difference is the caliper and it’s only a few grams, why not fit the 4 pots? (unless you’re really gram counting). Often the difference in quotes weights is that some are quoted with braided hose and some with plastic.

I would say go big with the brakes. The only thing that’s put me off the v4 is that pads from aftermarket suppliers seem thin on the ground.

I have a Transition Covert 2013 with a double barrel air and 160 mm all Lyriks. Running 1×9 with Saint bits and M4s. Just over 33lb
