  • Hope 30mm Bottom Bracket Bearing – how to remove bearing?

I’ve an Orange Five with a Hope threaded 30mm Bottom Bracket. ie. The BB has 30mm bearings (not the more usual 24mm) and I need to replace the bearings.

The BB is this one http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/hope-mtb-stainless-steel-30mm-bottom-bracket/rp-prod128184

My question is – How do you remove the bearings from the alloy shells? If I look inside the shell there is no ‘lip’ between the bearing shell and the alloy BB shell. Meaning there is no way to use a bearing puller or a socket on it to drift the bearing out.

I see that hope sell a BB bearing removal tool, but it looks like this works with 24mm bearings rather than 30mm…I may be wrong on this though (see http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/hope-bottom-bracket-bearing-tool/rp-prod53106?gs=1&gclid=CIna0ePikc4CFRa3GwodMsEKPA&gclsrc=aw.ds)

Any guidance from the STW masses? 🙂

There is a notch on the inside so you can get a punch/screwdriver in to start knocking them out.

Thanks unsponsored, I can see the notch you mean….sounds a bit heath-robinson compared to Hope’s normal standards of special tools etc.

unior do a bearing puller or as previously advised , tap them out.

Thanks Blarc70 but I don’t think that would work, there is no exposed lip for the removal tool to grip onto

Pretty standard practice in other industries tbh. Why would you want special tools?

See the recent hammer thread , my preferred method is to use an expanding collet type tool and then beat them out

A little trick I was told about for the 24mm ones is to put the cup and bearing in a boiling cup of water (bearing facing down) and a few second later the bearing falls out. Heat the alloy cup to put in the new bearing, let it cool and job’s done 😀

    Might work on the 30mm?
