I do feel every survey I have paid for was a waste of money – but did serve a purpose at the time.
Impossible to tell if the house was ok, based on report – just lot’s of issues identified for further specialist reports. Informally srvyr said it was fine and normal, but wasn’t able to ‘write’ that.
Beware all issues uncovered potentially requiring disclosure to mortgage firm – which may mean you are bound to remedy them on a retention.
If you do go for full it’s advisable to formally request surveyor to report on specific points you are concerned about. If for instance you are concerned about a springy floor and they won’t inspect the subfloor or lift carpets, what is the point. 🙂
You can’t really win – a knowledgable old house owner or builder could be more helpful, if you are seeking the confidence to proceed – but that can be a lot to ask a friend or acquaintance to ‘sanction’.
What aspects do you have concerns about? If you do go for a full survey commission it independently with someone local and call a few to discuss.
edit – homebuyers is the real hand in your pocket. It’s just a valuation report with some copied text about the age construction and general issues with houses of ilk – (in most cases!). But fella get’s paid twice!
