    Anyone make their own?

Following on from the toastie thread, I’ve just bought a set of waffle plates for my toastie maker. Anyone have any good recipes to share?

I think they are called bwilliant bweakfast waffles or something. My kids love them with strawberry jam and whipped cream, the Swedish way.

Weekend family staple here. I tend to use the recipe that came with our cusinart waffle machine just adding vanilla to it but Nigella did a foodporn version on her show last week that looked epic but laborious.

if anyone doesn’t have a waffle maker…..you can make waffle batter and then make pancakes out of them in a frying pan – used to be a favourite before we got a waffle maker.

Got my wife the waffle plates for her birthday, kids love them.

Will ask about recipes but I think she starts with the basic one and experiments with stuff like raisins and choc chips.

Cocoa powder added makes choc waffles.

I like them with cherry yogurt on top.

This is a hand-me-down recipe from an old German family friend.

    Waffle Mix

Makes 2 – 3 waffles depending on size.

    9 tbsp / 100g / 4 oz flour
    2 tbsp sugar
    1 egg yolk
    1 egg white
    2 tbsp / 36g melted butter
    1/4 pint of milk

Mix the dry ingredients together. Make a small well in the centre and add the egg yolk and melted butter and mix together. Add milk gradually mixing together.

Beat the egg whites until stiff then fold the stiff egg white into the batter mix. Make immediately.

Multiples of this mix is mandatory.

I was thinking of trying the toasted sandwich maker out as a set of plates as I don’t want to clutter the kitchen cupboards. IN the mean time, its pancakes as a fairly regular weekend family breakfast.

Yes, we have a waffle maker. As for recipes – that’s like asking for a recipe for toast. You make them, you put maple syrup on, you eat, you enjoy. That cannot be bettered.

We have the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook which is an American standard and contains every down-home American dish you can think of. Worth getting if you want to know what American food is really like outside of chain restaurants.

I use this recipe, which does not use yeast (unlike the Guardian recipe). The measurements are in US cups, but they are easy to convert to metric.

I tried about 10 different recipes with varying results. Best I found was this one:

The one thing that linked all of the better ones was separating the eggs and beating the whites. Yes, it’s a faff, but the texture is immeasurably better.

Dairy and egg free waffles are surprisingly ok…

    Nice I like waffles.

I normally buy those Polish waffles from Tesco £1 for two.

Obviously, home made is much better.

Theres a giant waffle (cooked in an iron griddle pan) with a chocolate sauce that he did on one of his TV shows but has never seemed to have published anywhere.

Theres a good reason for that.. I watched the episode and cooked one from the instructions he gave on that… on boxing day as a hangover breakfast for friends and relatives. In that case ‘Waffle’ is and anagram of ‘Awful’, it was a long winded and time consuming way to ruin a lot of nice ingredients and create a mountain of washing up. 🙂

It’s more like asking for a recipe for bread. But that aside there is very definitely good and bad toast.

    Aaah!……so you’re a waffle man!

Have you seen the end of the latest series?

    My favourite waffle machine..

Nah, that’s rubbish, all the waffles will have a light side and a dark side.

    Waffles to me are always…

Though I do enjoy some of the American hotels with breakfast buffet where you make your own waffles in their machine. Very satisfying, and sometimes messy. Goes well with the massive stack of deep fried bacon and strange meat slice stuff they call sausage. 😆

Yeah, was always something I enjoyed about the US.

    These are nommy, BTW. Impressed.
