    Any ideas how to make one? I’ve got one on order (£1 ebay, not £7 Park Tools) but could do with sorting out some fettling today

    stick 2 pins through a cork/piece of wood ?

    Halfords sell 4-packs of metal dust caps with a core tool built-in.

    I used to keep one on the rear tube when I used Schrader valved inners for each bike so it was always with me.

    actually, a dining fork might do it if you’re lucky with spacing

    You can usually many with some tweezers or maybe try some small forceps. Yo might need to file or grind a little off of either.

    4 inch nail, cut off point and cut slot with hacksaw. Been using it for years.

    Dust caps with the slot in them for just that purpose> Metal one are best. Every valve I have has one. Many m/c tubes come with them and I get them from a local m/c shop.
    To make them more handy fit them on a bolt. Cross thread them on and they never move. Or cut the complet valve stem out of a tbe and jam them hard onto that.
