Cities or large towns that are not too far from decent beaches/interesting coastline

Brighton? Edinburgh – but weather not great?

Newcastle, Hull, Cardiff, Grimsby, Liverpool, Southampton. Nope, can’t see the attraction

Plymouth. Nice old centre. Great beaches and coast not too far away.

York ftw – less than an hour to the coast, especially out of season/staying on the coast side or midway?

    Fort William, Oban, Inverness.

    Amazing coastlines.

Exeter? (Big town really…but it’s got lots and plenty of good coast nearby.)

Eta, York?!. How about Birmingham. England’s second city. Great nightlife and ‘only’ 2.5 hours from beaches around the English coast.

    Cardiff, obviously.

    Or… Whitby.

failing that, the Pembrokeshire coast is superb and St Davids is technically a city 🙂

Liverpool, 20 minutes to an hour up coast to Crosby, Formby squirrels and sand dunes and Southport or 30 minutes across the water to Hilbre Island or Neston.

Swansea has both the Gower on it’s doorstep and only an hour by car to gorgeous Pembrokeshire beaches.

If you are driving, Newcastle / Norwich / Exeter all have lovely coastlines within an hour’s drive. Also depends what you want from the ‘city’. St David’s and Bangor are both cities with gorgeous coastlines but they not large!

    Eta, York?!.

He said “close to”, not “on” the coast.

That was my first instinct too. Failing that, Cardiff maybe or Brighton?

Edinburgh. The city beaches are a bit meh but you are minutes from East Lothian, one of the sunniest, driest spots in the country and home to some great beaches.
