And oh my word didn’t they just absolutely murder a fine piece of radio play. I thought the original BBC serial production was bad, but this is just in a whole other, ahem, universe.

    Aye. Proper dreadful.
On the upside, just googled the music. Didn’t realise that it was by The Eagles

I thought the book was good, but hugely over rated, personally.

The books were OK, but it was the radio play that was most entertaining.

That she’s on the telly, rather than the sofa.

the radio shows, the books, the tv series, and the film are ALL different. get over it.

Not me. The film on BBC2 is abysmal in, and entirely on, its own right.

the space ships and alien landscapes in the radio series where far better 😉

The movie? It’s alright, but could’ve been a lot better.

The TV show was a product of its time; they moved a radio show to TV in the very early 80s, they did what they could.

    Overrated? Outside, now.

I was an extra in the big temple scene with John Malkovich, and even I can’t quite bring myself to watch the film again.

    But Zooey Deschanel? Oh yes.

Do you think that if Zoe got excited, in, er, that kind of way, it would make Deschanel Sauce?

I’m a huge fan of the books and the old BBC series.

So, with a massive budget and lots of acting talent how did they screw up the movie so badly?

They tried to make it ‘cool’ and in doing so lost that ‘geeky edginess’ that made the original authentic.

I read a review that took the dialogue apart – comparing lines from the book to their equivalents in the film. It was painful how the spirit of DNA’s writing had been removed from the script, apparently to make it more palatable to the American masses.

Phew, glad I missed it, loved the books, radio and 1st TV series.

I found that rewatching the Hitchhikers movie was far less uncomfortable than rewatching, The Phantom Menace. I didn’t mind it, actually. A different take, yes, but it still felt like Hitchhikers enough for me.
