Definitely a ton of fun, I did the same went sensible on the build kit and used the rolling fatty package from on one as by base package, upgraded to carbon forks which I think was worthwhile given the improved aesthetics and weight.

Would also recommend drilling the rims and changing to specialised tyres 2.5 inner tubes.

Absolute hoot whatever model you end up with

Biggest improvement to performance on a fatbike is decent tyres and tubeless – so that usually means avoiding O-O Fatty wheels and tyres. People having more joy from a Calibre Dune in this respect.

Had a look about and there doesn’t “seem” to be anything that comes close on terms of value to the on one.. SRAM X01 groupset… Dropper post… Pre drilled El guano rims.. Guide RSC brakes.. And Bluto forks?.. Seems a lot of bike for £1500…. Unless I’m missing something obvious..

A couple of questions that you might want to consider before splashing the cash?

Do you want to run 4″ of 5″ tyres?

Do you want the option to run a suspension fork or is rigid going to be all you want?

There are no right (or wrong) answers to either question, but it does help to narrow down the options a bit.

The obvious bit being you’re getting it from On One. 😉

1500 quid gets you a Surly Wednesday, much better wheels and tyres. It’d be cheaper to source a bluto than a good set of tubeless wheels and tyres. Run the rigid fork through the winter and see what comes up in the classifieds if you feel the need to add some bounce. The Wednesday will also take wider tyres.

I have the OO Fatty Trail you’ve described above. I’m not sure when your C2W scheme runs out but it will probably be worth waiting until they have one of their regular sales. I got mine with the reverb, carbon bars, guide brakes etc for £1,100.

Not sure why people think its so difficult to get the el guapo and floaters tubeless. I’m the least mechanically competent person going and managed both in about an hour. I just split a 24 inch tube and then poured the stans in, popped to the garage and used their pump, straight up. The rear hasn’t needed to be touched in 4 months and the front only went down when I dropped onto a fireroad with both wheels locked up and ripped a knob off upon landing.

Ekul was that with the xo1 groupset!!.. Bloody hell that’s something like 800 quid on its own!! 1100!! Wow…

Also never having been on a fatty I’m not sure exactly what’s best for me.. But where I live I can’t see much ever getting snow.. Or sand.. So mainly trail use and just dicking about in forests.. So I’d reckon the 4″ would be plenty fine..

Also.. Being on the wrong end of 14 stone.. Weight saving isn’t a huge deciding factor… Maybe if I ever get back to a whippet like build.. I’ll consider shaving weight off the bike instead of me..

chivalry – That wasn’t with the XO1 unfortunately. The way the deal was working was 35% off the basic model as a full bike, but I noticed when you upgraded any parts it was also 35% off them, so I added the reverb, guides and carbon bars. For some reason it wouldn’t let me upgrade the drivechain though. But with the levels of grip it gives I quite like having the granny gear to see just how steep you can get up!

Mines never seen sand or snow either but I love mine for trail riding, loads of grip and its just fun. Still keeping up with my riding buddies on it and once you get it moving it just keeps going. Surprisingly good in the air as well, really stable!

I have been at this lark for about 12 years now and had some very good bikes for example a Turner Flux (straight out of Interbike in Las Vegas) and some utterly shit ones – Intense 6.6 anyone ? plus plenty of decent bikes like my Trek Fuel 9.8

I have never had more fun and ridden as well as I do today on my Canyon Dude rigid but please don’t go 1 x 11 unless the big cassette cog is 45t or more or you are a genuine racing whippet. My Dude is 2 x 10 and thats allows me to get up silly inclines even loaded with bivi kit.

Phew.. I wouldn’t have been able to buy it on principle knowing it had been sold for 1100 quid previously… Lol.. So.. Given the X01 kit.. 1500 seems a bargain still..
Someone mentioned the fact its a on one was the downside.. Are they known for bad build quality/poor aftersales.. Or just not well regarded?.. Seeing as most everything on it is very good quality kit.. Basicly the only part that’s on one is the frame?.. So it’s either the frame or the company that’s the problem???

I’ll second that, 55mph off road so far on mine! Which is a Cube Nutrail. 4.4″ tyres, bluto forks etc. Picked it up barely used second hand for £900, you can pick them up new for not much more.

I’ve added a few upgrades as the brakes weren’t up to slowing you down from those kind of speeds. I changed the wheels to tubeless straight away, which was a piece of cake on the mulefut rims with schwalbe tyres.

One of the best bikes I’ve ever ridden.

dont think you can go wrong with a fatty trail, plenty come up on fat bike selling page for around £650/700

i found the wheels and floater to tubeless with gaffer tape and sealant and a ghetto pump, didnt need the split inners.

I bought one recently, very close to your budget, carbon fram, 1 X 11 SRAM, guide brakes, Jumbo Jim tyres.

im 6.ft had a large and a medium trail, enjoyed them both.
for longer less technical days out i would have used the large
for more mucking about and trail riding, which looks like your type of riding i would have used the medium.
i sold them both because i wanted a silver in medium, and not in blue, i now have the silver in medium, and yes i know im a tart lol.

i would think a medium is the biggest you should get

Have bought loads of stuff from O-One and never had a problem.
Can recommend their Fatty from personal experience but would also strongly suggest that you go 2×10, not 1×11.
The latter means that you dispose of one of the fatty’s funnest traits; it’s ability to climb up anything steeper and more slippery than you’d ever think possible. Go with the widest bar you can cope with; you’ll be glad of the leverage at high speeds.
Some things you’ll ride slower than on a big bouncer; and on some other things you’ll be faster.

Definatly no bigger than a medium.. Was wondering if the small might suit.. Or maybe a tad to small for 5, 9″..
As for the drive train.. No option for a 2 x 10… Could be wrong but the X01 it comes with is 1 x11 only.. .?

I’m 5’11” and have a medium; I had to add a layback seatpost for space, so you’ll be grand on the M. I’d respectfully suggest that small will be too small.
1×11..? Pure marketing fashion.
Horribly expensive when it comes to replacing worn out parts too. Despite years of parts manufacturers pushing the market, the reality remains that in the real world where you have to pay your own money to replace worn cassettes and there are real hills, you’re much better off with a 2×10.
I just can’t understand why folk happily throw away one of a fatty’s best attributes. On very steep or very loose climbs, nothing can get close to a fatty with a proper granny ring.
Plus, at the Angus Cycling Festival fat day last weekend, I watched several 1×11 bikes drop their chains when hooning through rooty forest; there’s nothing magical about narrow wide rings and no way to pedal it back on if it does drop!

Cheap & cheerful, I can’t fault my Voodoo Wazoo. £500 from Halfords, all I’ve done is buy a shorter stem, carbon bars & better tyres, £100 all in at Planet X sale.

I reckon I’ll invest in a dropper or suspension seat post & maybe a set of forks next year, we’ll see. Blutos are a crazy price so possibly a set of the new RST Renegades.

Although the plan for it to be my winter bike I’ve been riding it non stop of late unless I know I’m going to be doing really technical stuff.

Edit…. it’s not a light bike but its me that needs to shift the weight more than the bike does.

Love my Charge Cooker Maxi. About £800 I think from Evans a couple of months ago on sale. SRAM 11 speed, decent wheels and tyres.

Stuck a dropper on it (that I had anyway) and in going to chuck my XT brakes on as I don’t like the stock brake levers. Other than that it’s ace. I originally wanted a bike that could take a Bluto. However with a rigid fork on I don’t see the need for the Bluto, it’s handled everything I can throw at it.

Top fun.

+1 for going rigid – half the fun of a fatbike is proper cranking it up everything and then hanging on for dear life on the downhills!

Yeah, I’m glad my Dune can take a Bluto as it’s a good option, but I like it rigid so I’ve not gone there yet. Maybe next year some time.

One thing I’d say is, don’t scrimp on tyres- bad tyres can ruin any bike but much more so with fatbikes, by and large you do get what you pay for here.

I love my fatty. I bought one with a 170 rear hub which limits me to a 4.4 tyre. If I bought again I would go for a 190 or 197 hub. What about a Felt DD 70. Apparently a nice bit of kit except the rim won’t go up tubeless.

Do it!! I did, haven’t regretted it at all. In fact I haven’t touched my 456 ever since 😀 An absolute hoot!

I’ve been more than happy with mine rigid though its taken a little getting used to again after so many years on a full sus. But after Sunday’s first ever spin down some local fast technical (cliff edge) single track on the fatty, I found my arms & hands aching. I normally only ever go down that particular trail on a full suss.
It’s given me food for thought. Maybe Renegades next year, can’t afford Blutos.

Suppose i could strip the X01 off and sell it.. lol… although i must admit im curious how good it is at 800 quid! most expensive groupset ive ever used! lol
ad for the tyres ive heard alot of good things about the on one floaters? or should i be possibly looking at something else ? 🙂

if its any consolation,,, its been so long since i did any real excercise,, cant see my climbing anything for a while thats so steep it would need a granny ring.. lol… just looking at a steep hill will probably be enough to make me get off and walk 😀
