Get some XTR V-brakes secondhand for around £50 the pair and your folder will be transformed. I’ve done this with both of my folders and all the braking issues I previously had have just disappeared.

Don’t think you’ll get v-brakes on a Mezzo. Just get some better caliper brakes – Shimano 105 or similar should see a significant increase in brakeability.

What about levers? Is it worth upgrading them too?

And if I did upgrade the levers what do I upgrade them to?

Ultegra? Any Shimano flat bar levers from a road groupset will be fine.

check the drop on the calipers.

    Bmx calipers?

Some used RSX long drop calipers will be an improvement and accommodate the mudguard. Tektro R365 look like their spritual successors.

Have you considered changing the pads first? Salmon Kool Stops will probably be all you need.

As cynic-al be careful with the drop on the calipers if you swap them out
Strip down clean grease fit new pads and cables 1st
