So im building up a new bike and i realised i left pedals (duh) off my shopping list.

I don't want spd's so im looking at flat but i have no idea what to look for.

They have always just come on the bike before.

My riding is mostly singletrack not DH stuff around Wharncliffe and pines etc.

Anyone got any recommendations?

id recommend not getting loose ball bearing pedals eg DMR V8's as they are potentially less durable (although servicable)
Personally i'd recommend DMR V12 or the magnesium version- bombproof, fully servicable, range of colours etc etc

How much do you want to spend? Wellgo MG1s are very good- light, grippy, more than tough enough for what you describe… And at a very good price to boot. Only real downside is that they're a little thick but no more than most pedals.

Or you can pay twice as much for heavier V12s which are made in the same factory 😉

how much do i need to spend? If i say £30 is that too cheap?

For £30- these Nanos

Also sold by Kona (wahwahs) and Superstar (Nanos) but at £45-50.

Was going to say superstar nanos (I've got two sets) those others linked look exactly the same and a tenner cheaper…

think im gonna try and find some Wellgo's. I'll see what Je James at Chesterfield has in tomorrow.

The v8's are in my price range but should i avoid them?

Are you wanting to buy from a shop or is online ok?

lol indeed, anything with sealed bearings and some proper bushings are good. should be a few in your price range.

Yep wellgo MG1 are what i fancy.

There not on Je James site so i don't think they will have them instore.

MG1 from Highonbikes would be my call. The Nanos are the same price but weigh about half again as much. Thinner though.

V8s are, well, OK. Funny shaped platform, lack of pins, less grippy than the MGs and need a wee bit more TLC to boot. But not terrible.

Northwind- fine in theroy but for me;

The issue with the MG1 is that because they are made of Magnesium for lower weight, the pins rip out very easily and can't be replaced.

The Nanos can be- much more likely just to knock the tip of the pin off and then they can still be removed.

And how many times have you ripped a pin out? I've got 2 pairs and they both still have all of theirs. And it's not like they don't get bashed, they took a few monster hits at fort william. They're going to be more than tough enough for what the OP describes, if I can't break them with my enthusiasm for pedal strikes

You won't go wrong with MG1's.

I have them on both bikes. Can't fault them. They grip, the spin round, they are light. I haven't broken the older set yet and they're nearly 2 years old and still feel sound.

I damaged one pedal on a ride and the guy machining them sent me a new one from Canada after a chat on the phone.

Excellent service and no bearings to service-just bushes.
Grip like hell but don't rub your shins on it…

got some MG1'S today cheers chaps. Graphite Grey and they look perfect.

if you are using flats, you may want to consider shin protection…

Just need some last bits to turn up and fiddle with the geers and the bike will be finished. I can't wait.
