    Any IT guys on here?

I have an old (4yrs) e-machines laptop. It has an AMD 64 processor.

It has always run hot but recently it will not run longer than 40 mins depending on what you are processing before it cuts out. Running with a 3 dongle for wireless internet makes it even worse. I bought a cooling plinth to set it on but its still like a hair drier.

Cooling fan is running ok, no dust in the intakes.

    Anything I can do?

Is the CPU being highly loaded ? Run task manager and look at the CPU graph, is it maxed out ?

might not be dust in the vents but there could be elsewhere inside, might be worth opening it up properly and getting the hover and duster out.

does the fan come on before it cuts out or after?

if its after then it might be a buggered thermal sensor which is not telling the fans to kick in when the cpu reaches a certain temp.

The fan is on constant, and ramps up and blows very hot air out, the case is very hot as well.

Could be blocked air ducts due to dust.

Could buy a cooler tray with fans but not needed really.

I reckon it could be dust.

Look/search for over heating laptop on google?

Problem will almost certainly be as a result of dust blocking air vents – hoover it out!!!, but that may not cure the problem because as a result of the constant running hot the thermal grease between the processer and the fan heat sink will dry out, and result in inadequate heat transfer causing to run hot still!! ThaTt MEANS taking out the processorcooling fan and regreasing, Maplins or the like stock the thermal grease, but taking out the fan off the top of the processor is not for the unskilled, depends very much on the laptop.

Open it up and remove the fluff from the heatsink next to the fan.

try taking the battery out and running it from mains. If its then fine, your battery’s knackered, ie no life left and the laptop spends all its efforts charging it up.

Also, you can disable the power monitor (go to device manager > battery) in order to keep the battery in, but be warned it will not tell you when the battery’s running low and about to shut down so don’t do too much that needs saving without mains power.

Get quote on how much to fix and compare with new laptop price.

Anything more than £50 then use that to buy new laptop.

Don’t hoover/suck/spin the fan as it can damage the crappy fans they use!

Could be the cpu heat displacer/paste needs replacing?

If you have searched for death and spoken to experts then new laptop time.
