   Anyone got a good explanation for how to download a route from tinternet? How do I get a .gpx route from the web onto my new device and make it recognise it to navigate to?

   I wanted to put some routes on it people have saved for some of the classics.

   I can get a .gpx file onto my SD card as a track easily using gpsbabel but not a route, am I being a numpty?

   Nowt in the manual about it I can see. I am using the open source map on the card., seems good.

   Card is a 4GB card and when I switch the unit off it beeps constantly till I take a battery out, whats that all about? Got it new today from Amazon.

   Should I use the Garmin software?

   GPSBabel (free) will do it - but with great power comes a steep learning curve.

   Alternatively, use something proprietary like Memory Map - this will cost money and may not work, but if it does work then it's fairly simple (but n.b. the .gpx support is grudging as it's not theirs).

   Is the device beeping to tell you it's lost external power? What does it say on the screen? I use tracklogs to send .gpx files to the GPS, as a track or a route works fine.

   As an aside, I'm on my second HCX now, the first one started turning itself off all the time, the second one is doing exactly the same now, I'm not happy. Don't want another one, still waiting for Garmin to reply.

   Garmin eTrex's turning themselves off is a known, long-standing issue (assuming the problem you're having is the usual one). You can use an external battery pack, hack the mount to reduce vibration or take a soldering iron to the innards - all of those work (unlike returning the unit to Garmin).

   Mine doesn't beep repeatedly when I turn it off and it doesn't turn itself off automatically so it sounds like you have a problem. I assume you are holding in the bottom RHS button to turn it off? The good news is Amazon returns policy is exceptional. (bought a Garmin nuvi and it failed) Fill in the on-line form and they will send a replacement and an apology before they receive the knackered one back.

   I use memory map to upload the routes that I have downloaded from t'internet.

   Mine kept turning itself off on rocky descents. I glued a couple of thin strips of inner-tube inside the battery section and all fixed.

   However, mine has recently developed a problem in that the display keeps going off and I have to tap it a couple of times to make it appear again. Loose connection?

   I have tracklogs and am 'interested' in a gps, but am trying to get a handle on it all.
   Is it easy to transfer Tracklogs files to such a thing?
   How exactly do you do it?
   sorry for the numptiness of question, but I'm ignorant and curious in equal measures!

   Numpty question answered...

   You need a cable to connect your PC to the GPS. The more expensive models suppy these, the cheaper ones don't, but it's just a normal mini USB/PC cable which comes with cameras etc.

   The mapping software - Memory Map or Tracklogs or whatever - has a little button that allows you to "Send to GPS" (or similar wording). Just connect the two together, press the button, and BINGO!

    The eTrex switching off is a battery connection problem. We wrote an article on how to fix it here:

    Shame no-one at Garmin thought to stick a decent sized capacitor to smooth out power supply breaks but there you go, guess they don't mountain bike so much.

    Even more shame on Garmin on continuing to ship units with the same, known, problem.
