It’s time to buy a new helmet. My old one was fine, but is nearly 3yrs old now, and whilst it fits well it makes me look like Toad from the Supermario games.

Does buying a helmet that comes in ‘sizes’ (as opposed to ‘one size fits all’) help? Or is it unavoidable?

I have a huge head. Really big. And oddly shaped too. Sized helmets do help, especially if you have a smaller head.
Personally I love Giro helmets (I have an e2) and think they look good on anyone really. I look daft in one of those helmets that wrap around the back of your head more – all mountain style or whatever it’s called.
I love specialized kit but their helmets look like some sort of bad joke in my opinion.

It’s a pain that ‘sized’ helmets seem to be more expensive however 😕

I got my E2 for £65 in a CRC sale, they are normally over £100. Try looking for last years models. I did buy one from Winstanleys once which was £60 for an E2. Have a look round on the Internet.
Try Bell helmets, they look good and seem to be keenly priced. They don’t fit me well but a friend has had a couple and I reckon they look really good.

The Bell Variant and Sequence models are both quite neat in terms of size.

If you want a unisize option, the Bell Slant is also smaller than most in terms of its profile.

Multi size helmets are generally more expensive as the manufacturer has 2 or 3 times the tooling costs. However, they do tend to offer better fit and tend to be better vented/featured to justify the extra cost.

Just had a quick look. How about a Giro Animas for £45?

My large swede fits rather well into a Uvex helmet – my Giro Xen doesn’t look bad, but my Uvex looks great.

Hmm ok, I will try on a couple more different brands – my last was a Met and fitted well. Do Giro/Bell fit a different head shape to Met?

Giro xen is the best I’ve had for my very large, narrow, long (think Alien) head, apart from my Giro Hammerhead SC from 1993…

ey, giro helmets have a good assortment and if your thinking about ‘specialised’ helmets ….some bike shops say you have to have a specialised head to fit into one ! lol…

Got a Spesh 2D – as mushroomy as other lids I’ve had (mostly Giro), especially with my largeish noggin but almost gets away with it by being nicely designed.
