    Hi

My Mk1 joystick is just about to snuff it and so I need a replacement

I’d just buy a new one but have heard the recent models have a wider spread and are a bit dazzling to traffic on the road

Mine is used on strobe for commuting as well as night riding so I want something thin and directional, I have a bar light for proper off roading

What else is self contained and painless to use please but doesn’t flood?

    Cheers

Most XML-powered torches are pretty narrow beam- you could buy about 30 for the price of a joystick and decide which one you like? 😉

Actually optics are mainly driven by reflectors/optics than the specific LED, but they do make a difference

I thought XML (and XML2) U2s were fairly floody, more so than XPGs

Yup, but for whatever reason XMLs are usually bundled into narrower beams. I don’t know if it’s a trait of the emitter or whether it’s just random fashion but it holds pretty true.
