  • Headset bearing change or just buy a new headset?

Headsets are bit of a mystery to me, so looking for a bit of help/advice.

My frame has a tapered headtube. My fork has a normal straight 1.18″ steerer. My headset is a Cane creek thing. It’s making orrible noises so time for a service/replacement. Can I just buy some new bearings and pop em in somehow. (where from) or should I just get a new heasdset?

    Cheers.

Fingers crossed that I get a new crown race if I buy a new headset.

It depends on the headset- cane creek do allsorts including some fairly nasty OEM spec ones that aren’t really worth replacing bearings in but if it’s a decent one then it makes sense just to replace the bearings- easier and cheaper. You should always get a crown race with a headset.

It’s a half decent one. 40-series. Is it just a matter of dropping the bearing in the top and wee bit of fiddling about on the lower bit?
