Audio Technica ATH-M50 - or even M35 (both closed back, keep the outside world out fairly well), or a set of Grado SR80i (open backed, great sound, other people can hear your music and you can still hear the outside world)? All well worth a try.

I've got the Grado sr80s and the wife has some Bose QC15s. The Grados are much better musically but the Bose are awesome for cancelling out other noise and not allowing much noise out. On balance for home use I'd take Grado, for everywhere else I'd go for the Bose.
Don't know if this helps any??

Grado +1
...but the most important thing is to get out there and listen to the options.

I have the Bose AE2's but have been really disappointed with them for listening to music, I do still use them for watching movies on my iPad
For listening to music on my iPhone or iPod I bought These WS55i from Audio Technica, I also tried the ES55 which were also good but I preferred the extra base and extra controls on the WS55's

B&W P5's, are great, but a bit more expensive at about £250.
Denon AHD2000 Sound fantastic, but the build quality isn't so great, again, around £250.
Fischer Audio FA-011's are great bassy 'phones and get good reviews. They're great value at £90.
Fischer Audio FA-003's produce a very neutral sound, and again get great reviews. £109.
Goldring DR150's are again quite fragile, but they're incredible value as they're available for under £30 at the moment!
What will you be using as your source?
