  • Head units; does anyone make an understated one anymore?

I don’t want flashing neon lights, scrolling leds, graphic equalisers, etc etc. Just a plan black unit with FM radio and a bluetooth connection. Is it too much to ask? Is it?

Blaupunkt always used to be very understated and good quality to boot.

Alpine ones aren’t quite as bling as the Sony equivalents IMHO

I had a Becker headunit once, it was a lovely looking thing but not cheap.

Bluetooth hands free and music with voice control DAB and an external USB lead,
Not covered in buttons and the lighting has a simple white setting, just fitted one and I’m very pleased with it

A pretty understated DAB head unit from Pioneer, for £80:

Factor in a magnetic antenna and you’ve got a nice little setup for around £120 or so, the antenna that I bought for my Kenwood unit was £40 fitted, which was worth it as the fitting was a bit awkward behind the head unit.

If you want one with some buttons and a simple single colour display, probably best to get on eBay and look for some OE radios from older cars, before they all went for integrated, funny shaped fascias.

You could do away with the head unit completely – amp with a bluetooth adapter would do the trick.
