I really need to get the lights fitted.

Tripped over laptop cable yesterday; side of head against the doorframe, so actually grateful to be alive!

However, laptop now giving “hard disk 1 quick (303)” error.

A quick Google would indicate it’s buggered; is there anything I can try to save it & contents?

    Thanks.

You can get your data from the backups you’ve made, obviously.

That’s not an error I’ve seen before, Google would suggest it’s something HP-specific. I’d try mounting it in a caddy on another PC or using a Linux live CD to see if you can read it.

check connectors to HDD would be the first thing I guess.

Yep. Check the plugs s (power and data) are properly pushed in.

Next step is an HDD enclosure (or put it inside a desktop). It might be buggered, but I’d be surprised / you’d be unlucky, in my experience.

There won’t be cables in a laptop. There’s merit to removing the drive and reseating it though, could’ve jostled out.

Unscrewed cover and 2 securing screws, but didn’t seem to want to come out still (appears sealed down with silver coloured, um, stuff).

Booting up it just ‘clicks’ every five seconds. Sounds pretty borked to be honest…could do without this!

On a plus note, minor injuries don’t think I’ve broken my eye socket 🙂

Glad you’re OK. Would never have happened with a Mac! 😉

Weren’t you wearing your house helmet? Why anyone would choose not to wear one is beyond me 😉

Glad you’re not dead. Can’t help with the laptop.

    Lolz @ ‘house helmet’ 🙂

Anyone recommended a half decent laptop for £300 or (much) less?!

You don’t need a new laptop, just new hard drive.

True but I’ve bolloxed something to do with power as well, as it doesn’t charge now. It hit the ground hard!

Can someone tell me what the pertinent numbers are on this, to find a replacement?!

(Assuming I don’t have to buy HP spares?)

Dude – I have an HP laptop at the moment with a hard drive issue which I just managed to get around – maybe I can help you out?

You should mount that drive in another machine and try to recover the data.

I have a drive you can borrow in the meantime that should fit.

Do you have OS disks? Serial number? What OS was it?

As a permanent fix, you probably don’t need a HP disk.

We’ll be back in about 8PM, send me a text – sounds like an excuse for a beer and an attempt to fix. 🙂

Cheers Sam, will drop you a text fella. Win 7, genuine, no disks.

    “SATA”.

You’ll be hard pressed these days to find a drive that won’t work. Well, other than yours.
