I find the answer to this depends very much on how far abroad you are. Here in Oz just about all the vpn services struggle to stream, but proxy services have no such issues. Having been through this a few times now, I’ve settled with your-freedom, who seem to be able to make iPlayer work in HD for me here in Oz, which is great 🙂 Only downside is the BBC are tricksier if you want to watch something live, then you do need full vpn, which just doesn’t seem to work very well. One day I’m sure they’ll upgrade so they can spot proxy users for iPlayer as well as live TV, but they don’t seem to have done so in more than a year.
Silly really, I’d much rather give my money to them than a 3rd party, but as licensing laws just don’t ‘get’ global markets and the internet, looks like I’ll have to carry on benefitting a 3rd party instead
