About 4 or 5 years ago I went to a book tour talk by Lord David Owen when he was pushing “The Hubris Syndrome: Bush, Blair & the Intoxication of Power”. Im not sure I ended up buying a copy as the talk was pretty straight forward and covered pretty much what you’d expect it to. He has recently published an updated edition http://www.methuen.co.uk/the-hubris-syndrome/b/118 which may have some more depth in it.
For some politicians and business leaders, power can become an intoxicating drug and can affect their actions and decision making in a most serious way. The ancient Greeks called it hubris and identified arrogance and contempt for others’ opinions as classic traits. They also took comfort in the knowledge that the Gods would punish the guilty ones – nemesis….
…Their messianic manner, excessive confidence and belief that they would be vindicated by a ‘higher court’, brought chaos to Iraq and resulted in hundreds of thousands of civilian casualties.
TBH it’s probably like shooting fish in a barrel rather than anything really insightful…
