Looking for a new front tyre, Hans Dampf seems highly rated. The Trailstar had reports of not lasting too long, how would it fair in the Lake District?

Better off with the Pacestar or should I give a Butcher a whirl?

Trailstar is softer and tears up on the back but is good on the front.

Some has issues with side knobs tearing off but it was a warranty issue, mine have been fine.

Lots of mixed reviews, have a search on here but they suit me well and were great for the Lakes riding I did this year.

good on the rocks and drier trails, and trail centres generally. Not so hot in boggy stuff.

IME rear tyre is more important in terms of robustness in the Lakes. Any Schwalbe offerings wouldn’t be my choice tbh.

Best front tyre I’ve had in a long time, rather surprisingly, is an On One Chunky monkey. Cost me 15 quid in their sale, goes up tubeless no probs, big and very grippy.

I like the look of the new Maxxis Griffin as a rear tyre.

I thought the Trailstar compound should be OK up front.

I generally try to avoid boggy trails, but wet rock is kind of a given round here.

I was tempted by the Chunky Monkey, bit weighty though. £24 posted is pretty good though.

All good in my experience, I ran a supergravity trailstar dampf up front for almost a year in the Lakes, it’s the longest I’ve ever had a tire last without tearing/wearing out. A good all-rounder, found it a bit skaty on wet rock (BC Rubber Queen was better there) and cloggy in loam/mud (Magic Mary/Minion better there). Now on WTB Vigilante on the front.

I go a chunky monkey by accident (it came already fitted to a second hand set of wheels I bought). I’d never have bought a tyre that weight on my own, but it is hands down the best front tyre I’ve ever owned. Outstanding grip great size. I love it.

No 29″ CMs left in the dual compound.

Is the single compound any good up front?

Normally agree about schwalbe for rocky stuff – just doesn’t last. HD is exception though – ridden in Alps, Whistler and Lakes and awesome.

I have a HD pacestar on the rear and Magic Mary to front trail star and have just done 2 weekends in the lakes , both were brilliant ,friend rides DH ts to front on his Five and was chuffed with the way it handled compared to his High roller

done 9 months in the lakes and various other hikeabikes around scotland on a chunky monkey, worth the weight imho for the grip and durability

I have one on the front and have ridden it in the Lakes, it was excellent, grippy and I did not fall off. However, I could have been riding slowly!

I had them in Trailstar compound. They are probably fairly indestructible but they’re heavy, draggy, and entirely unpredictable.

They had a tendency to wash out sideways unexpectedly and twice in a month I found myself lying painfully on my side after the bike had gone over on shallow cambers.

They cost me £80 and I gave them away after 2 months because I disliked them that much. Now using Specialised The Captain Control and they’re much better.
