Is there a trick to get just the right amount of slack in your new strings to get the optimal 2-3 wraps?
I am sure there is a trick to it, as Ive done it before quite well, but cant seem to remember, anyone got any tricks?

You need to set more sag in your shock aprox 35% .
alternatively you could try another forum

I tend to go around once, feed it through the top of the capstan tighten it up, pull it from the sound hole to stretch it, tighten, strum it like a mofo, tighten, then wind the excess into a circle

you can get almost no wraps by feeding the raw end back under the incoming string

I thread the string back through the machinehead and pull it tight when it's this far away from the twelfth fret:
Then cut off the excess and wind in the slack whilst maintaining the tension with my right hand. I end up with 2-3 wraps on the machinehead:

I use locking machine heads, on my personal guitars and guitars I build. just Pull the string finger tight through the capstan,lock it, tune upto pitch, stretch,twang and retune a couple of times.
I have about half to one wrap tops on all my guitars with little or no pitch instability at all and strings settling into tune almost instantly as there's barely any slack to take up, just a little bit of stretch as the strings settle..
Thats not much help really is it?

Like the guy with a photo of a hand - I pull my string out to a point short of the horn of my SG, and wind from there. It's not perfect, but they'll be comming off again shortly.

jahwomble, I've got Sperzels on one of my other guitars. You're right, they do make life much easier.

the fender site has a bit of a guide I think
the taylor sight has a PDF I think showing you how to do the thing where the string kinds of folds over itself
