If you've ever removed a suspension spring and allowed it to fall off the compressors you'll understand why – there's a feckload of stored energy that gets released when they fail, so all hell IS breaking loose, it's just contained by your car! I know of one person who took on off a large 4x4s strut in his shed, the spring popped out of the compressor and punched a hole in his shed roof on its way to freedom!
