What’s that brand of spray that peeps swear by for removing/bleaching deep into grout mould?

    HG Mould Spray

Also good on black spots on the ceiling, black bits on sealant, water marks etc

HG mould spray here too. Effectively bleach in a bottle though. Be damned careful where you spray it – I’ve trashed a number of things with it by letting it drip on stuff when getting rid of mould on the ceiling and the like. Including the clothes you are wearing at the time.

That HG stuff is amazing, better than bleach is a spray bottle

HG is great, the wife protested about such chemicals being in the house until she saw it in action.

I use it to clean areas BEFORE I silicone (after it has dried) to make sure the silicone will not go mouldy at a later date.

Does it bleach mould on silicon sealant?

    Yep

I had trouble finding it in B+Q but it’s on a shelf with the mops, sponges and other specialist cleaning chemicals (BBQ cleaners etc). It’s not with the general solvents or plumbing/grout/silicone.

HG, lethal. Do not let it touch anything that you don’t want to disappear.

I used HG recently. Really effective against black spot mould above the shower on ceiling of a windowless bathroom. I sprayed on a cloth and wiped it on. Mould magically disappears and from experience it doesn’t come back for about a year (this was a reapplication).

One word of warning though – it really stinks, like a supercharged bleach smell, and it gave me a sore throat for a while. Suggest you take precautions if using in an enclosed space.

Hmm, might have to get some for work. There’s a few things/people that could do with disappearing! 😉

I just put bleach in an old squeezy trigger bottle and use that

works every time and cost about 50p for a bottle of bleach

‘..put bleach in an old squeezy trigger bottle and use that’

I tried bleach and some other off the shelf anti-mould formulations and they didn’t work. HG did the job.

Well according to the Safety sheet the good stuff in it is:

Sodium hypochlorite solution Cl active (>=1%, <5%)

    Sodium hydroxide (>=0.5%, <2%)

So basically bleach + caustic soda (I think).

Personally I find it a lot more effective, and easier to use, than my old method of blobbing thick bleach directly onto the grout and then leaving it for an hour.

Dragging up this old thread since I was trying to remember the name of the HG stuff because I need to redo the shower sealant. Any recommendations for mould-resistant silicone that’s actually mould-resistant or is it all in the preparation?

Its all in the prep, and pre spraying with anything that compromises the adhesion between silicon and your tub/tile isn’t ideal.
…Silicon wont stick to itself either so you have to mechanically remove all traces of old silicon.
I’d suggest mechanical removal, clean up and giving it plenty of time to dry. Water will also compromise the bond so its got to be plenty dry. Grout isn’t waterproof so wet grout will also evaporate its absorbed water as vapor. Once clean and dry, Isopropol or methyl hydrate are a good final prep. They evaporate without leaving residue.

The other issue is if you are relying on the silicon to bridge flexible gaps or work as a mechanical bond. Any movement between tub/tile will make short work of your silicon, make the bong fail, allow water organic material (soap/skin) in behind the silicon and it will start to allow mould growth under the silicon.

Basically, if your silicone install fails, you’ll get mould. A well prepped and well applied silicon job should last well, as long as you keep your tub/tile clean. Mould feeds off organic matter, so if you bathroom is a scummy mess.. you’ll get mould.

Also bear in mind that bleach doesn’t actually kill mould. You need a fungicide for that. There are non-toxic products like http://www.concrobium.com/ that do a great job!
While bleach does do a great job at brightening things up, sadly chlorine bleach is some nasty sh*t and really has no place to be used in the home.

I spray HG onto a sponge dish-scrubber and use that to attack the mould. Makes backsplashing it into your eyes as you spray the ceiling less likely.

Eye bleach is actually quite unpleasant. 😳

For half the price of hg just buy dettol mould and mildew remover, it does exactly the same thing.

    Thanks a lot dirksdiggler.

Having to get the place totally dry is the reason I put the job off. You need a period to dry it out thoroughly and another to allow the silicone to dry, during which time you can’t have a shower, and we only have one shower.

Unfortunately the silicone is a mechanical bond for the shower screen – not much I can do about that.

That Concrobium stuff looks interesting, but can’t find it in the UK except at massive expense. Would prefer something that won’t kill the baby robins if possible, but also don’t want to have to do this every 6 months :-/

People saying x,y,z is cheaper than HG Mould Spray. It costs £5 and comes in a 500ml so lasts for ages. Money well spent in my experience.

As mentioned good preperation is key. I have had good results with the UniBond anit-mould sealant. Sealed round the bath when we moved in here two years ago. It’s not dried after daily showers, and it’s not cleaned as often as it should be. In a bathroom with no extraction and some mould on the ceiling there is not a spot of mould on the sealant.

as a slight hijack – i could do with something to seal a crack in the grout on shower wall – it’s probably opened from a little wall flex, and is less than 1mm wide and about 30cm long, at around knee level – white grout – what should I use ?
