  • Grips that suit riding with your hands over the ends of the bars?

If I didn’t ride in such tight twisty woods much of the time I’d have wider bars. As it is I often ride with my hands over the end of the grips. My bike came with normal rubber grips which worked pretty well but I switched them for foam grips, which were good when new but with so much pressure on the outer edge they’re rapidly wearing thin. Hitting trees and other assorted crashes haven’t helped either…

I don’t want lock rings on the outer ends of the grips because that’s where my palms rest. I think I prefer thicker grips. Curiously, hammering down Cwmcarn at the weekend I didn’t end up with aching forearms but with aching fingers, like they’d locked in position, maybe because the foam grips are pretty thin now?

    Suggestions please!

Use any “lock-ring” style grip and some Cane Creek Ergo bar-ends.

Hang on, I don’t want bar ends! I ride with my hands as on normal grips but about 1″ further out on each side than normal. I have 670mm bars but my hands are about as far apart as most would ride on 720mm bars, if that makes sense? Thus when the trees are too close for comfort I slide them inwards a bit.

I ride that way and the ESI chunky silicon grips have been great so far (but that’s only a couple of weeks use)

I like these as extra thick grips … but doesn’t answer your request for no lock ons I’m afraid.

+1 for Druidh’s suggestion: Cane Creek Ergo bar-ends – I love mine for climbing and relaxed riding.

Chunky ESI grips – and I ride with my hand on the end of the bars, too.
