Special mention to How Soon is Now? as well, but that’s not really a riff.

Most of the riffs from Fu Manchu’s King of the Road, I’m Search of or California Crossing albums. It’s like they used a catchy riff generator on every track.

+1 for Walk by Pantera, so boneheaded but it wasn’t supposed to be clever.

You Drove Me To It by Hell Is For Heroes. It’s like a demo track for a triple rectifier.

Not sure which one, but it’s definitely Sabbath. Probably “Black Sabbath” (the song) for me – never have three notes sounded so sinister and foreboding, but honourable mentions for Iron Man, War Pigs and Sweetleaf.

For those liking things a little less heavy, Brian May’s had a few, but rather than his better known ones, I’d go with “Son and Daughter” from Queen’s first, eponymous album.

Sunshine of You Love is a good one (Cream).

    Beatles – Day Tripper?

    Blur – Song 2?

That Kasabian one that the crowd sing back when they play it live (can’t remember the name, the one off the first album that goes “Boom! Na nah nah nan nah na-nah Boom! Nah nah nah na-nah na-nah”

Actually scratch all of the above because I’ve just remembered the riff to end all “which riff” arguments, as played by the largest assembly of A-list bass players (and some others) probably ever assembled:

Impossible to answer, and so many genres. All the best rock/metal riffs were done years ago and now get recycled with regularity.

Tony Iommi will spoil you for choice. I like Symptom Of The Universe very much. Iron Man

The Troggs ‘Wild Thing’ must surely be The Proto-Riff?

Killing Joke’s ‘Eighties’ riff that was borrowed and slowed down by Nirvana to then become anthemic.

    AC/DC ‘Highway to Hell’ intro

Led Zep’s Jimmy Page, like Iommi, gave us so many it’s impossible to choose. Notable mentions are the galloping, explosive goodness of both ‘Achilles Last Stand’ and ‘Immigrant Song’

Elder – ‘Lore’ has become a recent favourite.
