  • Greatest Monologue in a film?

Be interested to hear the different opinions/nominations.

Tempted by Chaplin’s final speech in The Great Dictator but this is probably my favourite from Network (lot’s in that film but there’s something about the last two lines here):

I like the Shakespeare that Withnail quotes at the end of Withnail and I. Hamlet I think, but a good ending to a very good film.

Was going to pick Christoph Waltz in Inglorieus Basterds but too many scenes to chose from such a brilliant actor.

Ezekiel 25:17. “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.” I been sayin’ that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ass. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a **** before you popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin’ made me think twice. Now I’m thinkin’: it could mean you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. .45 here, he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. I’d like that. But that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be the shepherd.

Pete Postlethwaite in Brassed Off. Also makes me want to cry and laugh out loud every time I see steven tompkinson dressed as a clown on the hospital bed having failed to hang himself.

The one at the end of Raging Bull – not the speech itself but the performance.

No. Didn’t realise it was on. Not a film fan at all; this one just happened to stick in the mind.

Sky is running it at the minute, it’s a good film but having watched it this am it’s a bit corny too. Jack Nicholson is great in it the part just after that scene where he loses it is fantastic.

Yup then there’s the restaurant scene his attention to detail on accents is superb so much so it was made part of the plot.

Do you mean the basement bar scene? That is a cracker, as is the opening scene.

I also like the restaurant scene where he meets her, years later, with Geobbels.

    Drill Sergeant is fantastic.

That one. Her face and body language when she hears his name is brilliant.

Ah, I thought you were referring to the bar scene where he uses the accents of the basterds against them.

The strudel did look good, though.

Ah sorry for the confusion. Anyway that too is fantastic.

It did. Django has a little hint back to that.
