I always used to do this but do I really need to?

A light oil on both works for me. It only needs the tiniest amount.

Put it on, wipe it off. That’s all you need.

I just oil the spoke thread, nothing on the nipple.

TBH, it’s the rim I put some oil on. Just a dab round the spoke hole with a damp cotton-bud.

I’ve oiled nipples on rims with no eyelets but always oil the spoke threads.

i just put my nipples in the kidney dish and spray with what ever lubricant is handy.

just stops it binding up when building.

if im building some heavy duty wheels for a downhiller or the such – linseed oil is the lube of choice.
