Your experiences please…

My seat post no longer locks into the top position so it currently unusable – which is a shame!

It’s got to the point where I think the cable needs changing – has anybody done this? Is it a standard gear or brakes inner and outer? Or is it a specialist part that I need to order from the manufacturer?

Does anybody have contact details for the manufacturer? I would be happy to send it off for a full service if this is offered but I can’t seem to find any contact details for a UK based company despite plenty of Googling.

Your help and support would be much appreciated in this matter.

Standard gear cable, it’s quite easy but you need a teeny Allen key.

Bushings wear after a while, but very easy & cheap to do a home service, they last for years….

I think skyline cycles are UK service agent.

Or you can get gd on the states to sort it out

It’s a standard cable (can’t remember which though).

They are an absolute doddle to service yourself. Google it, there’s plenty of how-to’s online.

The key bit is the collar on the top of the lower bit of the post; you have to tighten it just right to make sure it locks properly at the top an bottom of the stroke.

GD’s are comically simple to work on thanks to being 200 year old technology. If the pin isn’t holding it in the top position it may well just be that you need to adjust the top collar, which screws on and can loosen with use (edit- as above but I was googling links at the same time 😉 )
Chain Reaction carried service kits, inside the post there’s 2 slider blocks a bush that sits at the top, then the top collar with a seal, and that’s pretty much it. I have the non-remote version so can’t comment on the cable but the rest of the post is the same. It may be that CRC/Hotlines have stopped importing them? I’ve heard good things about GD dealing direct but you have shipping costs etc to contend with

As above, have a fiddle with the collar. Lots of good diagrams etc on the GD website on taking the post apart. Rest in the knowledge once serviced it’ll quite a while until you need to do it again

As above. Unless the cable has snapped it would most likely be the collar that needs a little tweek.

As above, the cable is just a standard gear cable. If you do replace it, be VERY careful with the grubscrew at the lever end. If you overtighten it, you’ll wreck the lever.

However, it’s probably not the cable, it’s probably the collar, as others have said. Try loosening that gradually and see if the post will lock in the top position.

Also, it’s a good idea to remove the inner post, clean it, and check that it’s not bent or cracked. Then lube it and adjust the collar until it works properly.

Thanks all, I tried the collar adjustment as suggested and it has solved the problem!

Is this a sign that something is wearing/ needs replacing shortly? The said collar is now very loose and will probably move around a bit – will this cause other components to wear more quickly?

Not particularly (there’s not really much in them to wear out). Saying that, a strip down, clean and grease wouldn’t go amiss.

One of mine is like that – I just wrapped a few layers of PTFE tape round the threads before screwing the collar on. That sorted it.

Yes. Best to remove the inner post and inspect to make sure it’s not bent or cracked. Clean and lube it lightly, then reassemble. Tighten the collar just enough that it will lock in the down position.

Probably, if I remember right it needs tightened if its not locking down, loosened if its not locking up and just balance between the two.

Yeah, and tbh it only goes in 2 directions so just fanny about with it til it works.

It’s worth servicing them though- the main shaft will wear and go graunchy and eventually cause you lots of bother. Taking it apart, cleaning it, greasing it and rebuilding it is really easy and worthwhile to make your bits last

It’s worth checking the rubber concertina cover. It should sit in a groove round the top of the seatpost. If it isn’t this can stop the post locking in the bottom position.

I did some maintenance to my GD on Saturday.

Top tip: spray some lube into the lever triangle area. Everything sweet as – and no need to change the cable. 🙂
