Friend’s daughter has expressed an interest (which happily for her appears to coincide with a popular winter festival that usually involves parents buying their kids stuff they express an interest in).

I know nothing about what’s good, bad, what to look for etc when it comes to this kind of camera but said STW would! Are there ‘older’ models that are still worth getting that you can pick up cheaply (price is important they’ve just bought a new house).
Are there certain ‘types’ in a VHS/Betamax kind of way (showing my age) and are GoPro the best?

Any advice, experience etc most welcome. He lives in the States so any suppliers that are cheap would have to ship there etc.

    Cheers, Matt

I couldn’t find a hero2 for much cheaper than that. I have a hero1 and the menu is annoying, the hero2 is much more user friendly.

I imagine buying one in the states is cheaper.

Wow, if you think the Hero 2 menu is better then the Hero 1 must be shocking!

My son (14years) just invested in a gopro hero2 silver. He’s very pleased with it. Gopro black is “better” but silver is more than adequate unless you want to get really fancy with your videos. It will leave cash available for the inevitable extras like different mounts.

    It’s just numbers:

Atleast the hero2 has some pictures etc.

The hero3 looks like a dream to use in comparison:

I’m looking at GoPros and was considering a 2 off ebay, but you can get a 3 White for about £170 at the mo which is a steal and cheaper than a 2, though a second hand 2 will probably come with extra accessories Yes, everyone will cry to get a Black and anything else is just not worth considering, but it’s at least £100 more and the vast majority of people won’t use or need the extra features over and above a White. The White has the same video resolutions and spec than the 2 (apart from stills, but who uses a GoPro for stills and 8Mp is hardly crap) with built in WiFi and it’s smaller and lighter. Fits the bill for the messing around on bikes and skis I do. So ones on my Xmas list.

My problem is I don’t use it that often so I forget which button does what. I’ve now stuck some helpful reminder labels on the housing! Still haven’t worked out the button on the LCD back though!
I’ve lost count of the number of photos Ive taken of my face instead of making a nice mountain biking video.

Another annoying thing for me is that the Hero 3 is smaller than my Hero 2. I’m currently looking for a gimbal mount for my DJI Phantom and the more reasonably priced ones seem to be for the 3 rather than the 2.

Also check out the Nilox Foolish.. can be had for around £180 including waterproof case and screen.

the format of those things is all wrong for “extreme sports use” IMO – surely the lens should be on one end to allow a lower profile

… might even stop its wearer looking so much like a tellytubby 🙄
