  • Good value 2.2-ish tyre?

Now that my favourite Bonty Joneses are out of production, and the few that are left aren’t cheap any more, I’m looking for a replacement. Lightish, not too draggy, 2.2in or thereabouts (about all a Mavic 717 will take) and a reasonable price. Maybe something on offer?

    Any ideas?

Do you mean marketing 2.2″ (closer to real 2.0″) or real 2.2″ (closer to marketing 2.4″)?

How cheap? 2.3 Conti Vertical can be had for £15. Not very good, but cheap.

I’ve got a pair of – used once – ACX 2.2″ in the garage, if they’re of any interest to you? Personally, I hated them, but if you like them you can have them for the price of the postage.

Summery treads, the Michelin ones On One did were big and fast – not much cop this time of year though.

Edited for price 🙂 – 9.95 each for folders, and they went on tubeless OK.

    WHAT!!

Have just grown to love my ACX’s. What are they doing instead?

How about Bonty XR4s? I’ve read they’re big for a 2.2 tyre, though. Basic version can be had for £14.95.

I think the ACX have been replaced by one of the XR0-4 range, probably the XR3.

I’ve got a pair of 26″ ACX TR 2.2s well used but plenty of life left if you want them.

Some cheap wtb tyres on crc at the minute.

    You’ll get 2.3 on a 717 happily enough. I did for years.

    Running a 2.35 Nev/BG on a 717 here. No probs.
Wire bead Nevs can be got quite cheap, & not much heavier.

I’m going to get a pair of Panaracer Fire XC Pro’s from Merlin. Kevlar bead, good tread, 2.1″, and fairly light, about 560g I think, and I also think they’re the superior Japanese versions. Er… I’m not a troll, just got worn out slicks and want some knobblies for the snow.
Seem to be £23.75 each when you buy two. For some reason the price is cheaper in the checkout box.

shame – my ACX tubeless tyres are excellent alrounders, even in the winter

my XR4’s are huge though, and may not work on the back of some bikes – think they are 2.35 minimum, not sure about the XR2 and XR3’s – odd tread

i’d reckon for a set of cheaper tubeless tyres (if that is what you use) to try the Specialised Purgatory and Eskars – i find them to be better than a nobby nic, cheap (well compared to german tyres), and they are spot on size wise

Bonty XR4 2.2s are superb, 2.35s are very big. XR2s good in summer.

2.2 XR4 and Purgatory are very close in size, measure 2.2″ like a 2.35 High Roller. Good tyres, work well tubeless. Both roll ok, grip well. Confidence inspiring! No intention to change them until they wear out.

Have a look at the specialized range I use the 2.2’s on my 717’s with the ghetto tubeless conversion, roll well and grip well too.
No real issues so far and tubeless ready about £22 a boot

MTTM – I have replied to both of your emails, maybe the first one went to spam? Thought I’d leave a reply here just in case you checked back 😀
