No idea what they’re actually like when fitted but a quick Google suggests that a full set of custom leather seat covers for a Mk5 golf can be had for less that £300.

    Good luck!

    Key words: Practical, economical, safe.

DO NOT mention fast or make “brrrrrum-brrrrum” noises.

    I’ve got a Mk2 16v & a Mk4 V5.

Love them both. The Mk2 is a bit special, garaged & makes me smile a lot. The V5 is the auto, heated Recaros etc. Makes a lovely noise.

Love mine. Non dsg, it never fails to impress me after 2 years. Seats can be sorted for sub £200 easy.
Fuel around town sucks but on distance I’ve hit 40mpg but I needed the wind direction to help me get there!!

Got a few tiny spots of rust I need to attend to, I’ve had to polish the lamps but that’s it. Stick some good tyres on it and you’ll not believe the grip on it. I wish I had a longer commute as I look forward to driving it every day.

Wish I had dsg as I’m a lazy driver. Have heard horror stories about them dying and costing thousands but if you get it serviced you’ll be pretty safe.

It’s also a good bike car. Two bikes with front wheels off no worries.

Couldn’t be arsed to read through so sorry if I’ve repeated someone.

You’ll struggle to get any car better for that price.

Any rot on the wheel arches? Both my old ’04 and my brother ’56 mkV’s went on all four.

That’ll be the 4 sprung dirty technique.

Just traded in my mark 6 and had a mark 5 previously. Here’s the mk6 for sale at the dealer’s:

    clicky

As others have said, they’re great cars and hold their value better than most others I’ve owned.

danjthomas, £200? Anymore info on where for the seats ta.
Bregante, I’ve missed that then, I’ll have a look.
Not sure about the arches cheers for that, will have a proper look over the car next week when the better half has a test drive.

Yeah headlights are fogging, cracked fog light too, no dramas with that though.

Gee – I could be in the market for a GTI.

I’ve heard DSG boxes don’t last long after 100k.

other than that, 100% buy it.

I have a ’59 Scirocco 2.0 TSI DSG and it’s hilarious 10/10 would buy again.

Got me thinking now….very few for sale privately….but there are a few Seat Leons and Audi A3s with same chassis and drivetrain. A few 1.8TFSI A3s too.

Conventional wisdom has it that the A3 will be better finished, more refined and less fun, whilst the Seat will be more direct but worse in terms of refinement and finish.

Anybody got experience of both a GTi and one of these others?

soma, have you used mj interiors?

Yeah (the unwritten rules are if you own a golf then MJ Interiors are the only choice), They did a full alcantra retrim on my Mk2 Scirocco, full leather retrim to my Corrado and have done restorative work to the leather interior on my current Mk2 Golf as it was dried out and suffered from surface contamination leading to cracking of the leather and loss of surface pigment/dye, a basic repair such as your bolster should be relatively cheap, and they could also freshen up the rest of the interior fabric if your fussed about it.

Looks good soma although I’ll be going for a cheap repair for now.

Heard from the insurance and it’s only £11 more per year than my Focus… 🙂
Another test drive and closer look around in next couple of days I reckon!!
Anyone used any of the mobile dent remover outfits? Got 4 shallow dents in nsr door.

    I did it 🙂

Got a few things to sort out with the car.
Need to get it serviced, or at least have an oil change.
The main dealer service will be £370+vat 😯 (they charge £70+vat for the bleeding engine oil…) Been recommended a small garage so might go and have a chat with them to get another quote.

Trying to work out what oil to use, it has been topped up Quantum 5/30 longlife so guess maybe stay with that.
Feels weird driving it but it makes me smile

    Well done!

I’m running about in ours until the replacement arrives.. Managed 36mpg on a run out to Essex yesterday

Where abouts are you? Main dealers should be able to offer you fixed price servicing (which should be a lot less!)

    I always compared https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/service-booking/chooseRetailer with http://www.jkm.org.uk/performance/service.htm

That’s the price going by the previous service history, I’ll give them a bell tomorrow and double check.

You need to use the right VW spec oil. The manual will confirm which one your engine needs. Not saying that what you have is wrong but definitely check.

Seat repair would be less than 100 at the upholsterer who does bits for me in Sheffield.

Very nice! They go well the 2.0T’s don’t they? Couple of my mates have/had Mk5’s and they’re great motors. I would try and find a good VW indie specialist locally if you can. I use a local BM indie and I had an oil service done (oil and filter) a couple months ago for £95 inc VAT on a 3.0l petrol – it’s not even worth doing yourself for that money. Mind you I do live in the Northern wastelands (Newcastle) so stuff is cheaper!

My brothers got an 06 plate GTI which he bought a couple of years ago, had rot in both front wings but had them changed under the 10 year body warranty.
