  • Going riding on the Isle of Man, any advice?

    Morning all,
I will be heading over to the IOM for a week in July. I have never been and know very little about the place.
I will be getting the ferry over and then just sleeping in the van.
Is there anything in particular I need to know or be aware of? One question which did occur to me is will I need travel insurance in case I crash and hurt myself? Van insurance and breakdown cover are both fine, anything else?
Also, where would you recomend that I ride? I will there mainly for a race but thought it’s a long way to go for a weekend so I’d stay over for a bit and have a look around. I have very little interest in motorbikes but will probably still take the road bike and do a couple of laps of the TT course, but would like to spend more time on the MTB, long XC rides hopefully, any ideas?
    Thanks guys.

There’s plenty of people hurtle around at silly speeds crashing on motorbikes every June and August without bothering.

plenty to ride over here on the Isle of Man, you’ll be able to pick up a social ride during the week through the local forum < wwww.manxmtb.com > and I’m sure they’ll be plenty of suggestions for other rides if you ask anyone.

The reciprocal health agreement will cover you for small stuff, but if you need repatriation to the UK by specialist transport, you will be paying unless you have insurance.

Lots of fun in the south of the Island, the coastal path between Port St Mary and Port Erin is stunning…

…and there’s a good LBS in Port Erin (Erin Bike Hut) for post ride coffee & bike chat etc.

Andrew, plenty of us three legged type on here, drop me an email closer to the time and we’ll organise something. The vid above is my local loop, absolutely loads of stuff to ride, virtually none of it marked so helps to have some local knowledge on your side.
