    when I postdoc’ed at an American uni (Lehigh, a stereotypical affluent trustfund frat/sorority college) all the college kids drove European cars. Quite a profitable market to crack and as with student bank accounts I assume they’re hoping to develop brand loyalty with people at the start of a higher earning life.

    PS i thought charliebrooker’s anti car rant was tedious and the most witless thing he’s ever come out with, despite being sympathetic to his standpoint. I found Clarkson’s anti motorcyclist tirade funnier and more intelligent, despite being a motorcyclist. I initially thought Brooker’s feed had been hacked it was that poor. Maybe being married to The Huq has mellowed him and now he has to try too hard?

    Good for Giant. Most yanks really are beneath contempt. Anyway, their century (well 60 odd years) is over now and how i shall enjoy watching their relative decline.

    It’s not just bikes they try and get rid of;

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_American_streetcar_scandal

    testimony was presented to a United States Senate inquiry into the causes of the decline of transit car systems in the US. This alleged that there was a wider conspiracy—by GM in particular—to destroy effective public transport systems in order to increase sales of automobiles and that this was implemented with great effect to the detriment of many cities.

    They seem to have done the same in the UK over the same period. Not sure if there’s a conspiracy there but all of our cities had trams and then they didn’t and then a few recently have them again but on a much smaller scale. The deregulation of the buses in the 1980s coincided with the greedy years and car sales took off exponentially.
