Currently typing with my left hand as I bust a couple of metacarpals in my right hand on Sunday, riding up a short incline, that i’ve cleared quite easily on numerous occasions before!

When I get to tackle my new found demon in 8 weeks time or so, I would like some gloves with max protection, but that are still useable all year around for general trail riding!

Any recommendations,. . . or is it a case of MTFU?

How did you injure your hand?

all happened that quickly, not 100% sure, i’m assuming it was when i hit the deck! Spiral fracture to the third metacarpal and 4th fractured too!

Short climb up to cut just after going over the river Stour at Wordsley. Roots at top always a little tricky, had one eye on the two mtbers at the top, . . . . yep chaps it’s busted!

So it could have happened from you slapping your hand on the ground? Take a look at some mx gloves, I know a few people who use them for mtbing in. Alpinestars, Fox, Thor etc do a good range that will give far more padding and protection than a bicycle glove. They will be warmer in general but some of the lighter ones will still give you good feel and articulation, as well as the protection you want.

They will also probably outlast bike gloves 10 to 1.

If the mechanism of injury was that the fingers were forced back, then I don’t think there are many gloves out there that would prevent the fracture. Most of the armour in any gloves is about dissipating impact over a wider area.
Besides that, the main benefit is in keeping your skin intact. I don’t think you’ll find a comfortable-all-day pair of ultra protective gloves. It’ll be a compromise.
Personnally I’d always tend towards fit and comfort.

specialised fortress gloves are the beefiest XC gloves that I know of. Although I dont think that they’d have save you in this situation.

I only use proper DH gloves with total hard knuckle coverage after breaking most of my left hand a few years ago. I use 661 Cedric Gracias (no longer made) but I’ve tried Fox ones and Spesh ones and they were all fine for all day once broken in, if a bit warm in high summer.

Troy Lee – Grand Prix for me. Changing to wider bars means I smack them more often.
