  • Glasgow – where to eat and drink for a newb!

    Hi

Off to Glasgow at the weekend for the first time (bar passing through). Arriving by train and staying centrally.

Time Out suggests Ubiquitous Chip; Stravaigin; West; Nanakusa and Mother India among others.

Looking for evening meal and somewhere to drink on Sat night (happy for areas to go rather than individual bars), lunch the next day and also advice on best way to get to Hampden on Sunday evening (and back to the centre again!).

All food considered bar seafood, middle aged so real hipster joints are probably better off without our presence.

    Cheers

on best way to get to Hampden on Sunday evening (and back to the centre again!).

Cathcart Circle train from Glasgow central getting off at Mount Florida.

So much great food in Glasgow. Time Out recommendations are a bit traditional old skool places.

For drinking and eating I’d head to Finnieston. Really buzzing at the moment. Start at Charing Cross at

    or

The head down St Vincent Street towards places like

    http://rockus-glasgow.co.uk/ (I’m assuming you’re here for AC/DC)

And loads of other great bars in that area

    we did Glasgow recently

    would definitely do
fanny trollopes(pre theeatre setish menu) and http://www.crabshakk.com/ (truly tiny), again (Argyle st)

both I suspect would need to be booked and there were a fair few bars around them

Agree with both of the above – Finnieston – Argyll street from Lebowskis right along to Brewdog. Lots of good bars and places to eat.

Hamden from city centre. Walk or bus or taxi. Taxi fare will be the same as train for one person. St enoch centre – Cathcart road. first bus have an app that will show you the way.

Shawlands has a Butterfly and Pig thats pretty good.

For getting to Hampden on Sunday, as per Boarding Bob, just head to Central Station and find the end of the queue which will probably wind its way around the building. I’ll be in the queue too. It should move pretty quickly as they are used to handling football and concert crowds, oh and the Commonwealth Games. I’d expect the queue to be a lot more civilised than when Take That played Hampden.

Get off at Mount Florida and follow the crowds, and repeat for the journey home. Not too many watering holes in and around Hampden, but the Clockwork has a micro brewery and is pretty decent.

West is very good and they now have a bar in Woodlands Road which runs into Charing Cross, so would work with the suggestions above. Most bars will serve their beers in any case. The Ben Nevis pub is a good shout too in Finniestoun and a little bit more traditional than some of the other suggestions if that is your taste.

Update in case anyone else has similar questions in future.

As a first timer to Glasgow it surprised me a little as to how ‘strung out’ the place is! We stayed near Central Station and weren’t overly impressed with the immediate drinking / eating options! However, thanks to suggestions above I can confirm that Fanny Trollops is a fantastic place to eat! I’d get a cab there next time though!

Also West for beer drinking with good food as well. though far more basic fare. Another one that I’d rather have taken a cab!

ACDC at Hampden were on great form I thought though the venue isn’t one I’d rush back to. Sold out but gave the impression (due to stage position) of being half empty!! Odd that most of the gig was in daylight as well! Fiver a beer was taking the proverbial!

Aye, as a very rough guide, the centre of town is pretty rubbish for drinking. Unless you know exactly where you’re going you could wander around for ages without finding anything decent.

It’s funny, whenever I meet someone in town, we always spend the majority of our time trying to work out somewhere decent to go, then generally end up jumping in a cab back out of town!
