For a geological perspective then a map of an entire basin is pretty normal with cross sections and projections of outcrop or wells into that basin. A map of the Barents Sea for example, I’d want a “straight line” to be a “straight line” etc

I guess that makes sense, I suppose I’m more used to the opposite end of the scale where position of wind turbines/pipelines/manifolds/wells is of utmost importance. There’s been some cracking engineering errors over the years from coordinate system errors!

There’s a reason a lot of workplaces have GIS specialists so us rock lickers can go back to doing what we do best.

As an official GISser there’s nothing more worry-inducing than the colleague who “can use GIS” doing their own GIS, with no transformations, graphics instead of vector data, labels in the layout frame, hnnnnnnnnnn 🙂

    Doesn’t suprise me at all.

Most of our customers don’t have valid coordinates for half their infrastructure. I’m endlessly getting sent data sets where land based items are located in the middle of the pacific or a different country or underground or somewhere completely random….

I go back asking for clarification and just get sent the same duff coordinates. Wastes a lot of time…

When I joined my previous employer, one of their largest jobs was a site investigation for the remediation of an old coking works.

The coordinates for historical exploratory boreholes were saved in a spreadsheet. At some point in the past, someone had accidentally clicked ‘sort’, and then saved the spreadsheet with the coordinates all messed up.

The company was taken over by a large American multi-national. It took over a year to persuade them to upgrade a couple of single user ArcGIS licenses to shared licenses.
