  • Getting rid of roof tiles?

The house we bought has around 200 clay roof tiles sitting there that we want to get rid of. Has anyone done this?

Are we talking skip, reclamation or??

Are they worth anything or more likely to cost us to get rid of them?

Our council tip charges £3 a bag for building materials. And they express surprise at the increase in fly tipping.

We have a cache of old tiles, plasterboard, rubble etc. and decant a small amount into our wheelie bin once a fortnight.

Mrs BigJohn makes garden borders and planters out of various bits of stuff which look surprisingly OK.

    Good thinking, I’ll try freecycle.

I agree about fly tipping, don’t get me wrong. Councils charging vans full of rubble fair enough but recently the guy at the tip (sorry, waste recycling centre) tried to charge me £5 for getting rid of half a dozen bathroom tiles as this constitutes ‘hard core’.

200 is getting on for worth selling (if you can be arsed) …
If they match local houses then a good chance someone will either pay or take away for free…

Next door’s builder just offered me a “hundred or so” for free though when I let him use my drive to take them off the scaffold… (along with a few odd repairs – literally just replacing 4-5 tiles) so can’t be worth that much

(he just offered … I’d let him use the drive anyway)

Leave them outside your back door, they’ll be gone by morning.

    freecycle or gumtree

Are they pantiles? Some value in them if they are original

Or save for pimproofing the inevitable STW logstore

If your tip is fussy, might be easier to take to a concrete crushing plant. I found it was cheaper to hire a tipper, a tank of fuel and three tips at something like £10 or load, and still came in loads cheaper than a skip.

Obviously if it’s just a car load or two, even cheaper.

Just distract them at the tip with a “damsel in distress” and bung the lot in the general waste *

*May have used this tactic in the past

Two extra large sets of Scrabble tiles.

You’ll need a big garden to use as a board though.

They’ll hang around for weeks until you stick a sign on saying “50p each” . Then they’ll be gone in a flash.

Isn’t there a bistro or gastropub near you that would like them to use as the latest must have serving platters?
