I tried ’til about 1:30am on Saturday night, then gave up and re-fitted the old ones. Strangely, the old ones went in fairly easily.

Prior to this, I tried pushing, tapping from various angles, and eventually wacking several shades of hoo-haa into the new ones with different shaped bits of metal.

    All to no avail.

    Any clues?

maybe warm them up a bit to make them more pliable and liberally coat the outer face with grease/redrum/judybutter? I think I pushed the last ones in with some PVC waste pipe

Don’t warm them, put them in the freezer for an hour. then a bit of grease round the edge and a few ‘gentle’ taps with a rubber mallet and an appropriately sized bit of pipe. Shouldn’t take more than 2 minutes to get them flush.
