I have just bought an Oregon 700 to replace my very trusty Etrex 30.

The height recording is very poor, reporting much more gain that my Etrex, approx. 50% or more.

I think the problem may be that I can’t get the barometric altimeter to work. When I try and calibrate it with a known height I get a calibration error. When I display the barometric pressure it displays blank.

It’s the latest firmware and has been factory reseted.

If any of you have the Oregon 7xx range can you confirm that the altimeter can be calibrated and/or the barometer in the trip computer displays a valid air pressure.

My etrex 30 succeeds at both of these.

Garmin have suggested that it needs to be replaced which I can do since its only days old, but I really don’t want to do this if all units exhibit this behaviour.

Don’t now if this is any help, but I regularly calibrate the altimeter on my 600 and have had no problems with the display of air pressure or altitude.

I’ve had a 600 for years and it works fine. I’d return it as Garmin suggest and try again with the replacement
