  • Garmin Edge 810 problems – constantly switching off

Have been having lots of problems with my Edge 810 in last three months or so – switching off quite often – sometimes even before I can press the “Start” button. Looking online, seems like others have similar problems, but no consensus on cause/solution. Wondering if anyone on STW has had similar problems, and more importantly – figured out a fix?

If you’re on Firmware 5.10 you could try rolling back to 5.00.
The Garmin forums are currently down for maintenance, but instructions how to roll back the firmware are there if you do a search in the 810 section.

Have you followed the reset device instructions?

I’ve had a few issues recently and the first thing they advise is to reset the device.

Is it less than a year old? I. E still under warranty?

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I’m sorry you’re having trouble with your Garmin device and am happy to help. There are two steps to resolving this issue, please follow the instructions below to solve your problem.

Firstly, I would suggest that you update the software on your device:

To update your unit to the latest software, you need to use the Garmin Express application.

To download the application and view the installation instructions, please click the link below:

    http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html

For a step by step guide to assist you with this, please click the link below:

    Mac:

If this does not resolve the issue, then I would recommend performing a master reset of your device.

Please click the link below and follow the steps on the guide to get instructions on how to perform a master reset of your device:

If the above troubleshooting has not resolved your issue it could mean that we will need to book your Garmin device in for a replacement.

That’s the standard Garmin email response, they fob you off with that to get you off their backs for a few more days.
If you want help it’s much better to phone them, if the device is less than 12 months old they’ll probably offer to change it.
The crashing problems with firmware 5.10 are weird, I’ve been using 5.10 since it came out and never had a problem in over 50 rides, others are having several crashes on a ride.
    I suspect it’s mapping related.

If this is a bit ‘obvious’ don’t take it the wrong way…I actually had the same issue, even sent it back under warranty. Basically there is an auto turn off mode hidden somewhere in the settings which I’d turned on without realising. The chap who was dealing with the warranty told me that he couldn’t find any issues as soon as he turned that setting off. Obviously I told him I was fully aware of that setting and agreed to have it back to trial it a bit longer…that was 2 years ago…!

When mine turns itself off it is normally a reminder that I have not pressed the start button. The auto off is hidden somewhere 😳

FWIW – have done full reset (erased everything), device not in warranty, doesn’t rattle (apparently a loose battery can cause this) – although it has been dropped/crashed on many times so wouldn’t rule that out, auto-off isn’t on (does that make sense?), and in this specific case at least definitely not user error.

Here’s a link to others having same problem on Garmin forum, and instructions on rolling back, if anyone else needs the info. Will give it a try myself and report back in a few days….
