Quite fancied one of these for a while, thought with the new model out prices would drop but seems not significantly so far. What equivalents do people use? Ideally would like 8+ hours battery and the ability to follow routes and get directions

I was advised there would be a drop but not huge, the margins seem quite tight on the Garmins. Think I’ll end up with the 810 in the end.

Garmin prices have never dropped significantly with new models.

I think the 800/810 is still king amongst their competition.

What about an Etrex 30 + bike mount?

Much cheaper, but I’m not sure what the 800 gives you that the Etrex 30 doesn’t…

Not sure about pricing but the Bryton rider series seem to be pretty good as an alternative – Bryton Homepage

I opted for the Dakota 20. It does all the nav stuff you require. Slightly larger though.

The 800 offers you the options of HRM and cadence sensors if i remember ??
If its purely for navigation/mapping what about a sat-map/memory map type of thing, you`d get a good spec visual mapped gps for the price of an 800 ….

If you don’t want the off road mapping then have a look a the Garmin 705 too. They are now heavily discounted.

I’ve been using one for a few years and it does pretty much everything the 800 does except for touch screen, temperature and off road mapping.

You can plug a HRM into the Dakota. The bike mount is truly awful though.
