There are two similar ones by the M5 near Droitwich my guess is they broadcast TV or radio signals?

they're at Inskip, and are quite clearly nearer, I mean the 3 identical short towers in a row with a slightly bigger one to their left, just touching the horizon right of centre of the first shot

I suppose I'm asking in the wrong place as no self respecting mountain biker would choose to live at the far end of a large flood plain 🙁

I'm on the case – just emailed a Blackpool fella at work.

That's HMS Inskip – an in shore Naval base. I went to playschool there.

[edit] the masts on the left. Aren't the ones on the right just tower blocks?

I think so, I've found 4 tower blocks in Queenstown, Blackpool – I'd been looking too near the shore…

Cement silos or are they too big to be those, there is a Tarmac plant in that area?

Yep, it's Queenstown flats, less than a mile away from me (a self respecting mountain-biker who lives at the far end of a large flood plain 🙁 ).

    On Google Earth, they're centred around 53°49'27" N 3°02'12" W.

Cheers – a little mundane perhaps – but I'm fascinated by how far you (or should I say, my camera) can sometimes see, like Liverpool's cathedrals from Rivi:

    – and Wales beyond that!

Indeed, although the foreshortening effect is always a tad strange. For example, in the first shot, the masts at Inskip look a darn sight closer to Blackpool than they really are. 😕

While we're here, Simon – care to annotate my pic of the Lakes from Lancaster with which hills are which? 🙂

Langdale Pikes are on the right hand side yes?

Is Coniston Old Man the one in the middle?

ignoring those on the far left which will take some map checking, and L to R, White Pike, Walna Scar, Brow Pike, Buck Pike, Dow Crag – gap – Coniston Old Man (dead centre) – bit I'll have to think about – Langdale Pikes far right 🙂

Thought so, it's about 2 miles over my right shoulder as we speak. I took this from the same spot looking a bit further north – only had my compact Ixus with me though…

Thanks Simon, I waited patiently for that little pool of sunlight to wander its way up the Fylde, over Beacon Fell until it settled on Chipping. Worth the wait, but I wish I'd had my decent camera with me – you don't get clouds like that every day!
