A mate has a maxle hub “specialized” but there is quite a bit of play from side to side.
Took the maxle out and the hub housing seems to wobble side to side.

The bearings could be gone. I am going to presume it is cartridge bearings, for these you will need to remove the end caps then knock the bearings out and get new ones and press them in.

They are not necessarily that expensive probably £6 a bearing ish for decent ones (Fag/Ina, SKF) are all good quality bearings. Your local bike shop should be able to do this for you if you don’t feel up to it.

Impossible to tell not knowing the model can you post a picture?

Some pull off, others have grub screws that need to be removed first.

Is the hub black with end caps that rattle about a little ?

These can be a pain to remove. My preferred method is to use a slide hammer
But best to post a pic of the hub before getting to carried away
