    Need some help with a 2 part question (I’m a maths dunce):

    Whats the equivelent of having £5000 cash in my hand in 1972, today?

    And how did you arrive at that?

    £55,700

    OK, so thats 10x.

    I’d already got this figure but confirmed by the above calculator, its about 1000x more expensive to live, so in reality when you add costs to that figure, isn’t it actually worth £5.70?

    Where did you get 1000x from?

    Some careful adding up in the office, confirmed by the tool in the above link (Inflation since…)

    I imagine from the calculator on the same page, which comes up with total inflation of 1,014.00 % since 1972 which means about 11x not 1000x

    ie. 5000 * 1 + 100/1014 = 55,700

    not followed the link but if you had 5 k then in order to buy the same amount now you would need 55,700 [due to inflation] so your 1000x is out. It may be true if you just look at house prices. However inflation will be an average and white goods have come down and cars and foreign travel etc.

    10x or 1000%

    Not 1000x

    Alright smartypants I’ll give you that in this case, but it depends on how you phrase it, which we weren’t.

    A bat an a ball cost £1.10.
    The bat costs one pound more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

    5p.

    Bat = ball + 100

    Bat + ball = 110

    (ball + 100) + ball = 110

    100 + 2*ball = 110

    2*ball = 110 – 100 = 10

    ball = 10 / 2 = 5
