Is there anything like talkytoaster for the French and Italian Alps?

Would like some free Opensource maps for places like Les Arcs etc to load into my Garmin 800 for this summers holiday.

    Any ideas or links?

    Yep.

    Think this is the link…
    http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

Lets you select the map tiles you want and it generates a custom gmapsupp.img map for you.

    lots here too

I have used some of the links above for France and Italy – I just can’t remember which ones, sorry.

EDIT: I think it was Openmtbmap.org

Used to use openmtbmap and/or velomap before. But then found that Dutch link. Smaller downloads, but it does queue your map request and email you a download link when it’s ready (so don’t do that the night before going away!)
